Trades Training First Electricians Graduate

May 12 was a day of celebration. Not only was it the night of graduation for Momentum Trades Training’s first ever electrician program, but each of the 15 participants graduated with full time job to go to.
More than 350 people applied for the new program, and the Trades Training team interviewed each and every one in order to choose the 15 applicants who were the best fit for the program. These participants showed maturity, a desire to learn, dedication to pursue a career as an electrician.
Participants spent time at Momentum for academic upgrading, including math, science, English, and life skills. They also attended SAIT to learn the technical aspects, and spent one month on a worksite to get real hands-on experience. For their work experience 13 participants were hosted by Grand West Electric Ltd. and two by Custom Electric Ltd.
At the graduation, Matt Price and Larry Heckel, Project Managers of Grand West, were in attendance to address to graduating class. During Price’s speech, he announced that Grand West would be hiring all 13 of their work experience placements.
“We have a construction manager in the office that goes from site to site and every week we were evaluating the sites and what the guys were doing,” says Price. “It was unanimous that we wanted to take as many of these guys as we can. Near the end of the one month work experience, the more we talked, the more we wanted to take them all. They’re a big asset to Grand West Electric.”
Custom Electric were also happy to hire their two participants.
It’s safe to say that employers were pleased with the new program and with the participants. And the participants themselves had enjoyed the process. Participant Don Capili came from the Philippines eight months ago, and was impressed at the quality of training he was receiving through Momentum.
“It’s beyond my expectations,” says Capili. “The amount of support we get from Momentum, it’s like a family environment. They would take our calls after work and sometimes we would just reach out and talk to them about our experiences at SAIT.”
Momentum is proud to have helped 15 more participants become effective and dedicated tradespeople, and is already looking forward to the next group.
“This was such a blessing,” says Capili. “I would recommend this to anyone I know who wants a change in their life. This program has really changed my life.”
