Why Calgary needs an Indigenous gathering place

The vision for an Indigenous Gathering Place (IGP) is a space for Indigenous peoples to gather for spiritual, emotional, cultural, and social well-being in Calgary, and to be welcoming of all Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Calgary is home the fifth largest urban Indigenous population in Canada and yet has no place dedicated to Indigenous gatherings. Elders have advised that the home for the IGP be at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
The IGP is an Indigenous-led non-profit society that was established by Indigenous peoples, for Indigenous peoples in 2018. The IGP has been working together since 2014 to demonstrate the need for a culturally safe gathering space, including a secured site and building. The goal is to have this dream realized and establish the IGP in time for the North American Indigenous Games in Calgary in 2027, which also coincides with the 150-year anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7.
To advance Truth and Reconciliation in Calgary, spaces that allow Indigenous peoples to gather, learn, and practice ceremony are critical. Specifically, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to action #21 calls for the creation of Indigenous facilities that advance healing, cultural visibility, and community development. Momentum supports the Indigenous Gathering Place’s call to have the City of Calgary formally recognize the IGP and help work towards making the IGP a reality.
