A delicious infusion of appreciation and charitable giving
The air bubbled with excitement and a top-note of friendly competition as industry leaders, investors, and friends gathered at charbar in Calgary’s East Village for a spectacular Fundraiser and Brew-Off hosted by Macquarie Group.
Four corporate competitors paired up with a Macquarie representative on September 19th to create signature craft beers from a local brewery and raise money for a charity of their choice in this 5th Annual Charity Fundraiser. Further, Macquarie Group Foundation generously committed to matching every dollar raised at the event in support of the four organizations being backed. The participating organizations included: Momentum, Discovery House, The Children’s Cottage Society, and Special Olympics Calgary.
Brian Boulanger, President and Director of ARC Financial, and Chase Edgelow, Senior VP of Macquarie’s Commodity and Global Markets Advisory team, came together in support of Momentum. Theirs was a beer infused with watermelon, mint, and honey. While coming in at third place for the brew-off, Brian and Chase were tops in raising over $634,945 in support of Momentum’s economic development programs. With the matched amounts from Macquarie Group Foundation, this represents a combined donation of $1.25M and one of the most successful fundraisers in Momentum’s history.
“I couldn’t imagine a better result and I’m so glad that we were able to leverage this event into a great result for Momentum,” said Chase. “It was great to see Calgarians come together to support each other against the current backdrop.”
The Fundraiser and Brew-Off sought to highlight the many things that make Albertans proud to call the province ‘home’: Oil & gas, local and sustainable food, businesses by local entrepreneurs, and philanthropy.
Brian has been a key advisor and connector for Momentum for nearly a decade and says that it is the economic approach that Momentum takes towards poverty reduction that appeals to him. “When giving to Momentum, I feel like I am creating a real and concrete return in someone’s life. I see it as more of an investment than a charitable transaction”.
Over $1.9M has already been invested into the lives of Calgarians through Micro Business Loan opportunities – with a 93% historical repayment rate by participants. In 2018 alone, 73 of these micro loans created 117 new jobs and helped people like Caleb further learn, earn, save and thrive through his own window-washing business.
“We cannot thank Macquarie and the many donors of the night enough for such an amazing event and impactful campaign,” said Brian Hill, Resource Development Director for Momentum. “What makes this event so unique is that it is both a huge, well orchestrated party AND a massive investment into community work that is strengthening the fabric of our city. Paige Gloslee, Nikki Fulbrook, and Mary Stoesz from Macquarie delivered a flawless experience… from the appetizers, to the centerpieces, to the entertainment. The night was a spectacular success for all!”
