Momentum Staff member Lora Pesant wins Bhayana Award!

Today Momentum celebrates the tremendous achievement of Lora Pesant, Financial Literacy Facilitator at Momentum and one of the winners of this year’s Bhayana award for leadership.
Lora leads our StartSmart program, which can help you build financial assets by opening a Registered Education Savings Plan. StartSmart makes it easy to access free government money and also to begin the habit of regular saving for a child’s education. You can sign up for our next workshop here (and you should–because an important provincial grant called ACES is only available until July 31).
The Bhayana award is for front-line staff from United Way funded agencies. This family foundation recognizes what we know at Momentum to be true: It’s our front-line staff that creates bottom-line impact for people living on lower incomes. As a case in point: Lora’s program has helped families to open 1,420 RESPs valued at over $1.13M!
Lora won in the leadership category because:
1. She succeeded in building a wide web of partnerships that helps StartSmart succeed. Over 40 community agencies have welcomed the StartSmart program at their locations across Calgary.
2. She brought the idea of a “Free Money Party” to Calgary. These events bring financial institutions out to community gathering spaces. This makes the RESP sign up process much more comfortable for parents and families.
3. She raised the profile of RESPs as a poverty-reduction tool. Lora crafted a great case for why low-income earners need support to get started saving for education. She also found partners at primary schools and the public library to distribute RESP information widely to parents.
Congratulations, Lora! We are proud to celebrate your leadership and your success.
